My body buzzes with power—both from Alexis’ arousal and from marking her. Normally, it would take much more to restore me, but the combination of the two has catapulted me into a new echelon of strength. The Fallacious will regret hunting us this day. Next to me, Xhoshad widens his stance, bending at the knees while extending his claws. It’s a trait of my kind to be able to retract or grow them at will.

The barrier breaks down and shadows blast into the room, solidifying into one monstrous entity. Xhoshad shifts, the only sign of his apprehension. The Revenant Swarm is dangerous because the Fallacious’ army is built of thousands of wraiths who used to be whole, but have succumbed to the emotion that created them. Without a mate, my kind ceases to exist—unless another, more powerful Vasura harnesses the base emotion at the core of them.

Like the Fallacious has done with these men.

I suppress a shudder, wondering how close I had been to dissolving into nothing. Before Alexis showed up, I hadn’t fed in so long. Every day, I grew fainter and fainter, but I knew Xhoshad and Seriq wouldn’t let our corrupt leader get to me. If I had become nothing more than my base emotion, I would have been a specter of greed—a very dangerous weapon for the Fallacious to wield.

It makes me wonder what deadly emotions are at the core of the lumbering monster before me.

From the corner of my eye, two more pairs of shadow arms push out of Xhoshad’s side. He’s trying to even the playing field, and I follow suit—I just hope our twelve hands are enough to get us out of here alive. The Revenant Swarm wastes no time, lashing out with decisive intent. Xhoshad jumps up and over it, raking his claws into its side while I dip low and do the same to the creature’s leg.

The Revenant Swarm bursts into hundreds of wisps before reforming a small distance behind Xhoshad and me. A knowing glint shimmers in its eyes, and I don’t doubt one of its base emotions is cunning. I bare my teeth in challenge, welcoming its skill. If it had come only hours before, I might have joined its cause—I had so very little to live for—but Seriq changed that when he took Alexis. Now, I feel invincible. The Revenant Swarm is made of many devious emotions, but I’m composed of voracity.

Insatiability is an unbeatable trait—I’ll keep coming for more until there’s nothing left.

Diving forward in a swooping motion, the creature unfurls its tongue to wrap around Xhoshad’s six arms, lifting him high into the air. He roars furiously as the Revenant Swarm brings him toward its sharp teeth, intent on eating one I consider my brother. Pushing my claws even longer until they merge into a single, lethal talon, I run toward the wall behind the monster. Exploding into shadow form, I fly up toward the high ceiling of our home structure, tucking into myself to backflip off of the Revenant Swarm’s exposed tongue.
